Brissago is a small town suspended between the shores of Lake Maggiore and the steep mountains, on the border with Italy.
The lower part of the country's oldest, has grown up around the beautiful Renaissance church of St. Peter and Paul, surrounded by secular cypresses. Along the narrow streets that slope towards the lake you can admire picturesque corners, gardens, where lemons, oranges, cedars grow in the open air and in some beautiful mansions.
In addition to its factory of tobacco and cigars, Brissago is famous for its islands, which appear to be patches of bright green from the blue lake. From 1885 to 1928 Baroness Antonietta Saint-Léger, a Russian of German origin, planted a botanical garden designed as an earthly paradise and its successor, the department store king Max Emden, continued her work. Today the neo-classical villa houses a restaurant and the administration of the Botanic Park in the canton of Ticino.
